Charles Schwab… no, not the banker, the steel empire guy! He had a house on Riverside Drive, and West 73rd that rivaled any medieval castle. It took up an entire city block! And though the Upper East Side money people thought it was gosh, they were still in awe of its lawn, gardens, and interiors. Unfortunately Schwab lost everything in the crash of 1929, and died penniless ten years later. He left the mansion to the city in hopes that it would become the next mayor’s mansion, but LaGuardia said “NO!”. So the house, in all its disrepair, was demolished and replaced with a massive apartment complex in 1948.
