The epicenter of American and Global Economics. A good thing, right? Fine. But it’s dark past may be surprising to you. Wall Street was originally a literal wall that stretch from the East River to the Hudson River across early Manhattan. Made of clap-board and mud, this wall was constructed to keep the Native Americans out of lower Manhattan, then known as Minetta. Later, it became a marketplace for slave auctions; slaves which were referred to as “stock”. Sound familiar? So the New York Stock Exchange located on Wall Street, probably isn’t the origin story you thought it would be, but it’s important to know.
