Sometimes the best way to break out of your usual restaurant routine is to try a place that brings several food traditions together. That’s what drew me to Sassa Bienne Afro Caribbean and Cajun Restaurant in Marlton, where my visit delivered three clear favorites: jerk chicken tacos, amazing salmon with a Cajun twist, and homemade cornbread that belongs on your order.

For anyone in Cherry Hill, Marlton, or the surrounding South Jersey communities looking for something different, Sassa Bienne is worth checking out. Beyond the food, there’s a family story behind the restaurant that helps explain how this combination of flavors found its way to our area.

From a Mother’s Kitchen in Liberia to South Jersey

Sassa Bienne’s story begins with founder Julius K. Dossen and his childhood in Liberia. According to the restaurant’s website, Julius grew up watching his mother cook, learning how everyday ingredients could carry the flavors and traditions of home. Those early experiences became the inspiration for his own food business.

He eventually brought that heritage to a family food truck before opening a permanent restaurant in Marlton’s Meetinghouse Square. The move gave Sassa Bienne a home where diners could explore West African, Caribbean, Cajun, and soul food cooking in one place.

That background adds another layer to the menu. Jollof rice, jerk chicken, curry goat, and escovitch fish reflect different culinary traditions, while Cajun and soul food dishes broaden the selection. Rather than building the restaurant around a single signature dish, Julius created a place that connects several influences through food.

The restaurant also describes giving back as part of its purpose, with ties to the Sassa Bienne Foundation and a faith-based commitment to community. It’s a meaningful part of the business’s story, especially for readers who enjoy learning about the people behind their neighborhood restaurants.

My Wife's Recommendation: The Jerk Chicken Tacos

The jerk chicken tacos were one of the highlights of our visit, and we would absolutely recommend them.

Tacos are familiar territory for most diners, but the jerk chicken gives this version a different personality. The seasoning is the reason to order them, bringing Caribbean flavor to a dish that’s easy to jump into even if you’re still getting acquainted with the rest of the menu.

The Salmon Was Amazing

The salmon was another standout and honestly, one of the biggest reasons I’d return.

The flavor was just done right. That Cajun twist brought the dish together and made it memorable. It’s the kind of meal that reminds you how much good seasoning matters: the flavor becomes the part you’re still thinking about afterward.

The tacos are a great way to try the restaurant’s Caribbean side, while the salmon shows why the Cajun influence deserves attention, too.

Seafood fans should keep this one high on their list. Of everything I tried, the salmon was a clear highlight.

Pro Tip: Order the Homemade Cornbread

Here’s my pro tip , entrees come with two sides...get the homemade cornbread.

It’s easy to spend all your time choosing an entrée and treat the extras as an afterthought. At Sassa Bienne, the cornbread deserves a place in the conversation. It was one of the items I’d specifically tell someone to order when visiting.

Plenty of Reasons to Exp

lore the Menu

My review centers on the dishes I tried, but Sassa Bienne’s broader menu offers plenty of possibilities for another visit.

The restaurant lists dishes such as oxtails, curry goat, curry chicken, jollof rice, and escovitch fish, alongside Cajun and soul food options. That variety makes it an interesting choice for a group with different tastes or for someone who likes returning to a restaurant and trying something new each time.

I haven’t worked my way through those dishes yet, so I’ll save those judgments for another meal. Still, the tacos and salmon gave me enough reason to want to come back and explore further.

Check Instagram for Comedy and Live Reggae Nights

The food is only part of the reason to visit. Sassa Bienne also hosts entertainment, including stand-up comedy and live reggae nights.

That gives diners an opportunity to turn a meal into a full evening out. If you’re looking for a date-night idea, a gathering with friends, or something different to do locally, pairing dinner with a show is worth considering.

My recommendation is to check the restaurant’s Instagram before heading over. Look for upcoming stand-up comedy nights, live reggae performances, and other event announcements so you can choose a night that fits your plans.

The restaurant also advertises BYOB, so check its current details when arranging your visit.

A South Jersey Restaurant Worth Trying

Sassa Bienne gave me several reasons to recommend it: flavorful jerk chicken tacos, amazing salmon with that Cajun twist, and homemade cornbread that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Learning about Julius’s journey—from his mother’s kitchen in Liberia to a family food truck and eventually a restaurant in Marlton—adds context to what’s on the plate. It’s a personal story behind a menu that brings a range of food traditions to South Jersey.

For my next visit, there’s more of that menu to explore. For your first visit, I’d start with the tacos or salmon, add the cornbread, and check Instagram to see whether you can catch some comedy or live reggae while you’re there.
